Killing Giants

Run Toward the Giant That Opposes You  by Dutch Sheets

Every time you are faced with a giant of opposition, you must decide whether you will allow God or the giant to define who you are and what you will become. (© Newphotoservice / StockFreeImages.com)

It has been said that one of our great purposes in life is to give birth to ourselves. We have to find the purpose for which God created us and allow Him to give birth to it. Along the way, we must be very careful about what we allow to define us.

Throughout my life, I've had my fair lot of heart-wrenching situations, including the loss of loved ones, abandonment, rejection and betrayal by those I thought were trustworthy friends. The list goes on and on. Each of those circumstances tried to paralyze me and imprison me, defining my destiny. But each time, God broke in, offering me a way to freedom.

Every time you are faced with a giant of opposition, you must decide whether you will allow God or the giant to define who you are and what you will become.

In recent months, the Lord has had me teach several times on David and Goliath. I've become intrigued with the fact that the name Goliath means "expose; reveal." When the impious Philistine giant came against the nation of Israel, the cowardice of Saul and the Israelites was exposed while the courageous, warrior heart of David was revealed.

Life's giants expose our hearts and character, revealing who we are. When we face crisis, trials or opposition, those circumstances either reveal and amplify the greatness of God within us or expose our weaknesses.

When God's greatness within you is revealed, run toward the giant with whatever stones God has placed in your hand. And when your eyes are opened to the weaknesses that lie within, you are presented with great opportunity to be made strong in Him (2 Cor. 12:9-10; Phil. 4:13).

When we position ourselves with the Lord, circumstances around us lose their power to paralyze and imprison us. His love and power strengthen us. If we humbly yield to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, in time we can overcome our weaknesses, conquer our giant and take hold of the inheritance provided by God (Heb. 9:13-14; 13:20-21).

You don't have to let divorce, rejection, disappointment, disability or any other impious giant define you. The power of the past to dominate your present and determine your future is broken by the blood of Christ.

Choose to be forward focused and not past possessed. Profit from the past; invest in the future. Let those mountains of opposition become stepping-stones toward your destiny.

Know that when the enemy had you pinned to the mat and people were counting you out, God was making you into a Joseph, an Esther, a Paul—for such a time as this! Allow those heart-wrenching circumstances to shape you into who God has called you to be. Let only God define you and your destiny.

Don't rob us of the amazing you God made! He deposited something in you we need. You are predestined by God to do amazing things. He is calling you to rise up out of the ashes of opposition, face your giants with bold faith and cross over into your destiny!

How will you respond to that which is revealed when giants take the stage?

There is NO other

There are mountains we face that are of our own doing. There are mountains we face that are the enemy attacking. There are mountains we face that are the consequences of someone else's choices or behavior. There are mountains we face because God is allowing them to grow our character. There are mountains ... and, GOD IS GREATER! He is faithful. He is redeemer. He is deliverer. He is restorer. He is THE mountain crusher! He is ever present, ever aware, ever on our side, ever willing, ever has it all worked out, ever and ever. Selah.
Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid. The army that fights for us is larger than the one against us.” Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, open my servant’s eyes, and let him see.” The Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.   2 Kings 6-16-17 (NCV)

Because She Rocks!

I don't know many people who have lived to be 96 years old. My Grannie is one of them and she's still ticking. She has outlived all her siblings, her parents, her grandparents, my Paw-Paw, all his siblings (his sister was mere days from 100) and two of her children, one of them my sweet Mother. She is a pillar, as was her Mother before her and my Mother after her. She has seen pieces of life that are ugly and pieces of life that are just so sweet. She was raised to love the Lord with all your heart and with all your mind and with all your strength and she has done that! She is a shining example of Him in skin.

About a month ago, we got to visit with her. There is just something unexplainable and very precious about sitting with her and holding her hand, always so warm and soft. She has never once not known me or my family or asked questions about our doings, in spite of her failing memory. She is, for me, one of the last true pieces of my Mother. She and my Paw-Paw loved us through our Daddy dying and supported my Mother in everything and what an amazing legacy. I am the only of the grandchildren with Perry's coloring. He called the two of us "the last of the Mohicans!" So funny! My Grannie was an amazing cook ... potatoes, carrots and roast was a favorite and her casseroles and all the yummy desserts she whipped up. And talk about competitive. Gracious! That woman could play some tennis and after that don't think about losing if you were on her team in Ping-Pong! :) I still have the quilt she and I made when I was in high school and they lived with us for awhile after everything they owned went down-river in the flood. My sister has her pressure cooker and the sound it makes. Mercy the memories.  She made all the corsages and boutonnieres for my wedding, among other things. She and my Paw-Paw were always there to fill in the missing pieces and to create amazing memories. Oh, all the fun we had just being loved by them. Treasures that will stay with me forever. I love my Grannie!

When we married, she made Brian an afghan that was extra long for his height.
She has always loved him, always asked about him, kidded with him, giggled with him. Still does!

The entertainer! She solicits the most hugs and kisses! :) Grannie loves it!

Our girls have had the gift of growing up knowing their great-grandmother.
So amazing! Our big girls and their "Big Grannie!"

The Least of These

Missing these precious children God gave us to love on for a season. The top two are gone elsewhere and the bottom one we still have the blessing of communicating with. They are "the least of these." (Matthew 25:34-40) They are the ones God calls us to love. They didn't choose their lot in life. None of it. And, they would leave it in a heartbeat for something else. They are angry and hurting and joyful and loving and beautiful and funny and I would adopt them all ... "the least of these." They have a huge hole God is filling in ways they couldn't have thought of and still don't see and it is humbling to watch. God's ways are not our ways, but they are always perfect ways. I have thought often of the kids in other countries, who are underprivileged and unloved and given away and struggling, as the "the least of these." And, truly, they are and they need His help through us. And God, in His amazing grace, has been showing me "the least of these" in our own life. The ones He is putting in our path to love on, learn from, encourage, hug, feed, dress, be a safe place, help as best we can and point to Jesus, always point to Jesus, even in our brokenness. Heaven will be full of "the least of these." The imperfect, crazy-looking, giving, loving, servant-hearted, amazing "least of these." I can't wait to hang out with them!

Pumpkin Faces

Memories captured from the first "Pumpkin Carving" in our new home!

Gotta get the top off and the guts out.

Not sure it smells so yummy and that goo that comes out. Icky!

Drawing the plan ...

She has a plan, too!

Concentrating ...

Ready to carve!

No paparazzi, please! Artist at work.

So serious, we had to get out the power tools!

Wait for it ...

First happy face done!

Finishing touches ...

Which faces are crazier? Theirs or the pumpkins?

Just one more thing ... :)

Aren't they awesome!

A Box House

You've heard the saying, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." So, in that vein, "When moving gives you boxes, make a box house!" :)
